Traditional vs. Implant-Supported Dentures: What’s the Difference?
April 16, 2025 9:00 amIf you’ve lost several or all of your teeth, dentures can help you eat, speak, and smile with more confidence. But not all dentures work the same way. You may have heard about implant-supported dentures as an alternative to traditional ones—but what’s the real difference?
Let’s take a closer look at how they compare, and how to know which option might be right for you.
What Are Traditional Dentures?
Traditional dentures are removable appliances that rest on your gums. A full denture replaces all the teeth in the upper or lower arch. A partial denture replaces only some teeth and clips onto nearby natural teeth for support.
They’re often more affordable upfront and don’t require surgery. But they can take some time to adjust to. Since they aren’t anchored in place, traditional dentures can shift during eating or speaking. Over time, they may also need to be relined or replaced as your jawbone changes shape.
What Are Implant-Supported Dentures?
Implant-supported dentures are secured by dental implants—small posts placed in the jawbone that act like artificial tooth roots. Once the implants heal, a denture is attached either permanently or in a way that allows it to snap on and off.
Because they’re anchored in bone, these dentures are more stable and don’t rely on suction or adhesives. They also help slow bone loss, which is common after teeth are removed. Many people find them more comfortable and easier to speak and eat with, especially over time.
